Legion of
Mary
Our Lady of Victories Praesidium
The Legion of Mary, founded by Frank Duff, is the largest apostolic
organization of lay people in the Catholic Church. Its origin dates back to
Dublin, Ireland, September 7, 1921 and is now in almost every country in the
world.
Each unit of the Legion is called a Praesidium. Each praesidium is
named after a title of Our Blessed Mother. Our Lady of Victories is the name
of our praesidium here at St. Michael's and has been in existence for over
37 years.
There are two types of membership – active and auxiliary.
Active members meet weekly and perform two hours of service each week.
Active members primary duty is to assist the pastor in the needs of the
parish community.
Some or our work includes visiting nursing homes, visiting families of newly
baptized babies, and taking the Eucharist to the sick and the aged.
Auxiliaries, or praying members, supply prayer power which is needed for the
active work of the Legion. It requires the daily recitation of the rosary
and the Legion prayers.
Our active Legion of Mary meets every Tuesday at 10:15AM in the Parish
Center. The meeting lasts about an hour and a half. A leaflet called the
Tessera containing the prayers of the Legion, together with the rosary, are
said at every meeting. There is also a discussion of the work done during
the past week.
We extend a hearty welcome to anyone who might be interested in becoming
either an active or auxiliary member. Contact the Parish Center (908)
276-0360.
